Fred was re-discovered in 1960. Although he had not recorded, he had of course performed, but only locally to his Mississippi home.

I had another version of this by McDowell from another album, more upbeat. Love it.

I'm on that 61 highway starting tomorrow. Proud to say we did Hwy. 61 top to bottom this summer. Great trip.

I always tell the story of how I saw Fred play when I was in high school at a local ballroom circa 1970-71. it was very up close and personal and after he played I walked up to him and asked him if I could buy him a shot...he agreed and I bought him a shot of whiskey. RIP Fred!

"He did not record until he was discovered in 1960." well, that's a load of crap. Alan Lomax would also laugh at your face.

my dad past away a few years ago and I was listening to this tune at the time. I tuned the guitar to d and started playing with Fred. it was stuck in that tuning for several years. i was finnally able to write a song for him but in reality it was just this song. Mr mcdowell , thank you,!

thank alan lomax 4 that he recorded blues artists all over the country n all of it would have been a memory if it wasnt 4 him,i dont think the vinyl reissues r analogue tho,im suspicious of labels now so i buy the old 1ps without multiple overdubs n inferior sonics,i want nothing but 2 exspeariance it as it was,the sad fact is.98% of new lp n 45 reissues r pointlessly digital 2day,n far from respect what the original musicians intended.all the original releases r far superior n its a sad fact

Whenever I listen to Mississippi Fred McDowell I'm afraid he's going to jump out of the record player and smack someone upside the head with his guitar. Not even N.W.A. or Slayer can compete with the level of aggressiveness in Fred's guitar picking.
