On The Beach
It’s time to leave, this party’s boring
I’d rather be alone with you
I found a place where we can go
Just the two of us will know
'Cause there’s some things I’d like to do
Ooh, I want to
Woo you all night on the beach
'Cause we got all summer to learn how to love
On the beach
They don’t expect us 'til tomorrow
I’ll have us back again by two
We’ll take the car and slip away
There’ll be no one there to say
Just what we should and shouldn’t do
Ooh, I want to
Oh, I want to
On the beach (on the beach)
I’ve waited so long to be there
We’ll take the highway, just outside the city
'Cause the night’s young and you’re so pretty, yeah
Ooh, I wanna… ooh, I wanna… oh, I wanna
lol. Eric can may be romantic ( Boats Against the Current, My Girl, etc.. ), contemplative ( Desperate Fools, The Way We Used to Be, etc.. ) or just plain lustful rock ( so many other tunes ). I was surprised to hear how soft spoken and reserved he was in person. Sure wish he was still making music today...
In re: to "mattjacklery" & "Alex Johnson"; Commenting on the "lustful", and "teenage lust" . . . I have to say that Carmen actually was very cleverly NOT lustful himself, by the way many of the lyrics are put together. For example, "Go All the Way", starts with a storyteller singer saying, "I never knew how complete love could be, // Till she kissed me and said,..." So, he is telling us how a girl taught him about love and changed his life (as per the next to last, "Before her love I was cruel and mean ...//...But now I've changed and it feels so strange. . ."). "And she says to me . . ." When I was young and first heard the song I don't think I realized that part of the lyrics. And maybe we weren't meant to, since they were trying to get some attention....and DID!!!
I realize that is not necessarily the case in all his songs. But many of them are very cleverly written. He was and still is a serious talent. Not to mention having been a child prodigy in music.
I consider myself somewhat of a rock historian and have recently discovered the awesomeness of the Raspberries, it's startling given the quality of their records they could be so overlooked. This is 1st-rate stuff. So today I'm in my car listening and it hits me, "Eric is not particularly subtle about his desire to get laid in about 1/2 their records!" (incredibly ironic given his reserved public persona). So then I read your comment "teenage lust songs..." Uh-huh, I'd say, lol.
This has always been by favorite Raspberries song. I was 13 when this was released. I was so naïve, as with all of their songs, I had no idea what was going on 'on the beach'. LOL
I feel sorry for those who didn't grow up in this wonderful time of love songs. I've loved Eric Carmen since I was 8 years old and still do at almost 56
