As great as Louis Armstrong was, often overlooked was Johnny Dodds, a true jazz immortal!

He was the best of all, even today.

The Hot Fives and Sevens are timeless.A friend of mine had a house gig in a hotel in Virginia Beach back in the seventies that featured big band people that were still around like Bob Crosby, Pee Wee Hunt, and Russ Colombo and others. And Bobby Hackett was playing and my buddy got to know Bobby and hung out with him some.He said Bobby had a small cassette player that he carried around with him and only listened to Hot Five tapes, and would cheer when he heard something he liked on those tapes and did so constantly.

You know that you do good music when 90 years later you still tap your foot to a tune. You can really hear Armstrong making the trumpet parts evolve from the traditional horn approach of earlier music. Awesome!

Hard to believe that Louis was only 26 at the time of this recording. Unlimited musical imagination.

I wish I was born sooner. I can listen to it now but wish I could have had a room full listening also.
